REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – Would it be possible to learn about Islam in funky ways? The answer is simply “yes”. It has been done by a Muslim student association at Universitas Indonesia (UI) known as Salam UI, and Quranic Generation (Q-Gen).
The general director of Salam UI, YS Gunawan, said, Salam had several activities. One of them is spreading Islamic teachings and serving people. Salam has a periodic program to study about Islam every Thursday. Or you want to learn Islam but unable to attend the program? No worries, Salam UI also utilizes live streaming. “We want share and disseminate the knowledge to anyone unable to attend the program,” Gunawan said.
His organization even uses social media like Twitter and Facebook to expand the networking and spread the knowledge. One of its activist, Nurul Ivar Faturahmi, said, the amount of friends in Facebook is already full. “In Twitter, we have 3,016 followers up to last week,” Faturahmi said. Salam UI is established in 1998. The members are 200.
Salam UI is a well-known organization among other student organization within campus. It often shares its knowledge with other foundation, such as Gamais ITB. Salam UI has had its business activity named Salam Corp since four years ago. It serves photocopy, rents projector, and distributes charity in Islamic celebration day such as Idul Adha.
Another approach of Islamic studying is offered by Quranic Generation. The Deputy of Quranic Generation, Uswatun Hasanah, said, her organization attracts many members since it is built. “We have 1.400 youth members,” she said.
In Quranic Generation, approaching Alquran with tadabur (contemplation -ed)is introduced to its member. In other words, introduction and comprehension of Alquran are studied in detail. She said, the method is in the form of tauziah (admonition –ed). They begin the study from the last section of Quran, which consists of short chapters. “It makes them easier to understand and memorize chapter by chapter,” Hasanah said.
The activity is held every Saturday at 13.00 WIB. Each class contains maximal 30 members. Their member is ranging from 15-25 years. Again, thi is an example of how young Indonesian Muslims learn about their religion. Who says learning Islam cannot be modern?
