REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TANGERANG – In a bright shiny day with lots of activities, you will get thirsty easily. Stop what you are doing and enjoy Selendang Mayang ice, the thirst quencher. 

In Jalan Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, Pinang, Tangerang, Buang (60 years) sells several traditional beverages, such as Cendol and Cincau. But, the winner is Selendang Mayang, a specialty of Jakarta.

Buang or people call him Bang Buang (‘bang’ literally means big brother –ed) has his own recipe to make Selendang Mayang. The common Selendang Mayang as you can find in Tanah Abang, Center Jakarta, is green. Different from that, Buang makes the red one. The basic ingredient is also modified. Instead of rice flour, he uses sago flour. While the original one uses suji leaves or Dracaena angustifolia as colorant, Buang uses red colorant paste. A lining of red on top of the ice makes it beautiful.

Being helped by his wife, he had sold the green Selenday Mayang before. “It is not popular. The consumers prefer the red one,” he said.

The process is easy. He explained, boil sago flour with water. After it is thickened, pour it to a bamboo container. Let it cool and hardened. Then, cut it with a bamboo. Add coconut milk and ice. To make it sweet, Buang uses liquid cane sugar instead of brown sugar, palm sugar, or artificial one.

His Selenday Mayang is sweet, fresh, and delicious. Not only quench your thirst, it also satiates your appetite. The price is affordable. One portion served in a bowl is 3,000 IDR. Buang has sold this beverage from 1970s. At that time, he sold it in Slipi, West Jakarta, with his cart. Now, he sells in a stall.
