Thousands of lanterns adorn Borobudur sky on New Year's Eve

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAGELANG -- Thousands of lanterns lit up the sky above the Borobudur temple area, Magelang district, Central Java, in celebration of New Year's Eve.

Thousands of balloons were released into the sky on Friday at 00.00 a.m. local time from Lumbhini Park in the complex of Borobudur temple.

President Director of PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan and Ratu Boko, Edy Setijono stated that as many as 2,016 lanterns lit up the Borobudur sky.

He remarked that the lanterns were released as a symbol of gratitude and prayer for the passing year and hope that 2016 would also usher in blessings.

"The activity represented a symbol of gratitude and prayer to God for the passing of 2015, a year full of challenges and blessings, as well as a symbol of hope that the upcoming year would also be full of blessings," he noted.

Before the release of the lanterns, PT Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur held an interfaith prayer in the temple complex.

The activity was part of the programs outlined for the New Year's Eve celebrations titled "Borobudur Nite 2015, Music, Lanterns & Prayers."

In addition, the event was enlivened by contemporary art performances, with Rio Febrian and Fariz RM as the guest stars.

"Various traditional art performances were also held in 20 villages around the complex of Borobudur," he added.
