Strong waves sweep away local tourists

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- At least three local tourists remain missing since strong waves swept them away in Anyer Beach, Banten Province, on Sunday (Jan 4).

"Three tourists have been swept away by strong waves along the coast," Head of Banten SAR Agency Heru said here on Sunday evening.

Heru noted that the tourists were swimming in the beach on Sunday afternoon when strong waves swept them away.

The agency has identified the three tourists as Nanda (10) from Depok in West Jawa Province, Raihan Kamil (11) and Rajuli Pata (7) from Tangerang in Banten Province.

"A SAR team is still searching for the missing three," Heru added.

The Chief remarked that the weather in Banten Province, including Anyer Beach area, has worsened creating strong wind and waves up to 1 to 2 meters high.

He has cautioned tourists against swimming in the beach for safety reasons. The search team has been continuing their efforts even on Monday (5/1).

Meanwhile, at least three people in Ubung Village, Central Lombok District in West Nusa Tenggara Province, have reportedly been swept away by strong waves in Mawun Beach.

"Yes, there have been reports about strong waves that swept away three people. We received the report at 1800 hours," Public Relations Officer of Mataram SAR Agency Putu Cakra Ningrat told Antara.

The SAR officer has identified the victims as Lalu Lukman (50), Nurdin (40), and Baiq Erma (15).

Meanwhile, a person named Lalu Alam (15) is feared to have swept away by strong waves after he tried to help Baiq Erma.

The search team had not found the body of Lalu Alam until Sunday evening.

"We have been communicating with our leaders about weather conditions," Putu had said, adding that the search team will continue on Monday.

The Chief noted that the SAR team has deployed eight officers and an inflatable boat in Mawun Beach to search for the body of Lalu Alam.

"We also have diving equipment ready. We hope to find the victim soon. Local communities are also assisting with search efforts," Putu added.
