Sasambo, batik from Lombok

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MATARAM - Lombok Island located in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) has a distinct batik named as sasambo. Sasambo derives from three big tribes in Lombok. Sa from Sasak tribe, Sam for Samawa tribe (Samawa is people from Sumbawa) and Bo from Bojo tribe (Bojo is people from Bima).

The pattern of Sasambo is traditional house from Sasak, Samawa, and Bojo. It also portrays the picture of red pepper and lizards, the local animal from Lombok.

Batik Sasambo is usually made by order. "Government usually orders hundreds piece of batik. They choose their own pattern and color," said a staff of batik sasambo gallery, Sahir, on Saturday.

He said that the price of batik sasambo depended on the difficulty of the pattern and the material.

Batik painting is also a handicraft from Lombok. Abstract pattern and scenery are two usual objects of the painting. The painting is sold for 150,000 IDR to a million IDR.
