REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Communications and Informatics Minister Rudiantara undertook a working visit to the islands of Anambas, Natuna, and Batam. He went there to evaluate the readiness of the west package of the Palapa Ring fiber optic cable project.

"The Palapa Ring project complements a network that has been built by telecommunication operators. With the presence of the west package of the Palapa Ring project, an area untouched by broadband will have high-speed internet access," the minister had noted in Jakarta on Monday (Mar 26)

In Anambas Island, Rudiantara paid a visit to the location of the network operation center (NOC) or the location for the placement of fiber optic cable activation devices following the installation of undersea cables from Batam Island to Natuna Island.

He also inspected the NOC on Natuna Island. While visiting Natuna, Rudiantara reviewed the quality of 4G cellular services offered in the border areas to ensure that the quality of service is well-maintained.

"The west package of the Palapa Ring project covers 11 districts and has shown progress this March," the minister stated.

Since its official start in August 2017, the western package of the Palapa Ring fiber optic cable network has successfully linked several districts in Sumatra and Kalimantan: Dumai, Bengkalis, Siak, Tebing Tinggi, Tanjung Balai Karimun, Tanjung Bembam, Tarempa, Ranai, Singkawang, Kualatungkal, and Daik Lingga.

Installation of the fiber optic cable in the west package of the Palapa Ring project had been completed at the end of February 2018.

In addition to public relations, the Palapa Ring project is also strategic in terms of serving as a means of communication for the Indonesian Defense Force and for maintaining security in the border areas.

In the framework of equitable access to telecommunications services in the frontier, outermost, and remote regions, the Ministry of Communications and Informatics has built telecommunication infrastructure facilities, including the Palapa Ring project.

The project consists of the west, middle, and east packages. The west package of the Palapa Ring project will become operational in March 2018
