REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Five Indonesian provinces will be prone to conflict when the country holds simultaneous regional head elections in 2018, a police officer said.
The five provinces are North Sumatra, West Java, East Java, South Sulawesi, and Papua, Chief of the Public Relations Bureau at the National Police, Inspector General Setyo Wasisto, said during a discussion on preparations for 2018 simultaneous regional head elections here on Monday.
He stated that the National Police Headquarters and all provincial police stations have studied potential conflicts, which may happen during the elections.
There are 10 variables, which serve as a guide for chiefs of provincial police and district/municipal police across the country, to secure the elections in their respective jurisdiction, he noted.
The variables include professionalism of election organizers, conflict within political party executive board, professionalism of election supervisors, geographical conditions, characteristics of local people, and security issues.
Other causes of conflict during the elections include names of voters excluded from the definite voter list, lack of logistics, and unwillingness of candidates to accept defeat, he remarked.
The elections will be held simultaneously in 17 provinces, 39 municipalities, and 115 districts across the country on June 27, 2018.
