REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA – British cruise ship Caledonian Sky damaged coral reef in Raja Ampat, Papua after sailing up the shallow water. Environment and Forestry Minister Siti Nurbaya said the ministry to seek criminal elements and compensation to be paid by the company. "Because it is damaging, there are indications on crime, but we need to investigate it first,” said her in Presidential Palace in Jakarta on Monday.
The incident was reviewed by the first level echelon of Coordinating Ministry on Maritime, as the cruise ship continued its journey to Philippine. Both institutions had sent its delegation to the coral reef location. They had also held the information on the cruise ship identity and its agency.
The incident was happened on March 4th, 2017. The cruise ship brought 102 passengers who perform a bird watching activities in Waigeo. About 1,600 meter squares of coral reef were damaged after the incident. In the previous case where there was oil pollution at sea, the suspect should give compensation and rehab the environment surroundings.
