REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- The magnitude 6.3 quake in that happened Malang, East Java, at 14.05 West Indonesia Time was felt in many areas in the province and even in Yogyakarta in Central Java and Denpasar, Bali.
"Based on our records, the earthquake is felt in a number of regions in East Java and even in Denpasar and Yogyakarta," according to Rita, a forecaster at the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency at Class I Juanda Meteorology Station.
The earthquake's epicenter is located 9.57 south latitude and 112.64 east longitude and it had no potential to cause a tsunami.
The regions that felt the quake include Blitar, Banyuwangi, Madiun, Pacitan, Pandaan, Trenggalek, Bangil, Tulungagung, Kediri, Batu, Jember, Karangkates, Surabaya, Denpasar and Yogyakarta.
A quake observer at the Karangkates Geophysics Station, Agus Purwantono, confirmed that the quake had been felt in a number of regions and in a number of locations it could be felt at IV MMI.
"Especially in Karangkates the scale of the quake was measured at IV MMI meaning it could make walls or locked doors to shake and men to wake up from their sleep," he said.
He said he had so far received no report of any damage to structures especially in the South Malang area where the epicenter of the quake was located.
Regarding after tremors he said his station as well as the station in Juanda, Surabaya, the capital of East Java, had had no record of them so far.
Risky Octorina, a resident of Surabaya, said he was startled when the hanging lamp and the fan in his house suddenly were swaying.
"First I felt dizziness but then I was aware it was different and saw the fan in the house is moving," he said describing the effect of the quake.
Panca, a office worker on Jalan Ahmad Yani, Surabaya, said he felt a little tremor while he was in front of a computer.
"It happened I was on duty at the office. While I was working in front of a computer I suddenly felt a tremor although it was not very strong. Initially I was not aware that it was an earthquake but I knew later that it was after receiving information," he said.
