74 suspected terrorists arrested following Surabaya bombings

14 of 74 suspected terrorists died in a raid and during the suicide bombings.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- National Police have conducted counterterrorism operation following recent terror attacks in Surabaya, East Java. The operation was held on May 13 to May 20.

In seven days, there are 74 terrorist suspects arrested, said National Police spokesman Mohammad Iqbal on Tuesday (May 22).

According to Iqbal, there were 14 of 74 suspected terrorists died due to their resistance over police and also they died during the attacks. In East Java, police arrested 31 people and four of them dead.

Meanwhile, in Banten and Jakarta there were 16 people arrested with two of them killed. In West Java, eight people were arrested with four of them dead.

Furthermore, in Riau, nine people were arrested with four of them dead. In Lampung, four people were also arrested. In North Sumatra, six people were arrested.

Iqbal said the arrest made as measure to prevent acts of terrorism. The series of suicide bombings in Surabaya began on Sunday (May 13) morning at around 7.30 am at three houses of worship, namely the Catholic Church of Immaculate Santa Maria (SMTB), the Indonesian Christian Church (GKI) on Diponegoro Surabaya street and Pentecostal Church on Arjuno Surabaya street.

A man and his wife, also two sons and two daughters were all killed in suicide bombings. The incidents left 18 people killed, including the family of six.

Meanwhile, several explosions were heard after the one before that left three people hurt at a rented storey house in Wonocolo, Sidoarjo. It was located several kilometres west of the scenes of church bombs in Surabaya. Then on Monday (May 14), terror attack happened at Surabaya Police headquarters.

Terror attack emerged again on Wednesday (May 16) at Riau Police Headquarters. Four of five attackers were killed and one policeman was killed in the incident.
