REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- One of three submarines ordered by the Indonesian Military, made by Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME), will be shipped from South Korea next week. Indonesian Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu will witness the delivery ceremony of the submarine at the shipyard of DSME, South Gyeongsang, South Korea.

"This is the second submarine to be delivered on April 25," South Korean Ambassador to Indonesia, Kim Chang-beom, stated here on Thursday.

Meanwhile, the first submarine, named KRI Nagapasa-403, arrived in Indonesia in August 2017 and another submarine is being assembled in PT PAL Indonesia, Surabaya.

Ryacudu hoped that the inclusion of KRI Nagapasa-403 submarine in the ranks of the navy will be able to support the regional security and stability and realize Indonesia as the world's maritime axis.

According to Ryacudu, the defense of the country needs to be supported by strong weapons systems.

Based on the DSME 209 submarine procurement contract implemented by the Ministry of Defense with DSME, three submarine units were being implemented since January 2013. Each of the vessels weigh 1,400 tons, with a length of 61.3 meters, width of 7.6 meters, and speed of 21 knots under water.

The ship, with a capacity of 40 personnel, can sail for more than 50 days and is equipped with a torpedo launcher, which is capable of launching 533 mm torpedoes, and surface anti-ship missiles that are the modernization of the Indonesian Navy submarine fleet.

Kim hopes that this defense cooperation can be developed not only for the procurement aspect but also for the assembly and transfer of submarine technology.

"The cooperation of defense is one of the pillars of strategic partnership between Indonesia and South Korea," he added.
