REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The US-ASEAN Business Council held a meeting with Indonesian Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut B Pandjaitan to discuss a number of investment opportunities in the maritime sector. Energy, tourism, salt industry, and efforts to address marine plastic waste are among issues being discussed during the meeting, which involved 41 US-based companies grouped under the US-ASEAN Business Council
"The minister asked us to consider whether there is an opportunity for investment. I think there are a number of sectors, especially in tourism and surrounding industries, which is included in the radar (of investment)," the Council's President and CEO Alexander C. Feldman stated at the ministry's office in Jakarta on Wednesday.
In addition to tourism, the council also sees an opportunity, where the American companies can cooperate with the Indonesian government, to educate the people about marine plastic waste.
After a meeting with President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday (March 13), followed by a meeting with Pandjaitan, the US-ASEAN Business Council will continue to discuss cooperation opportunities by talking to the Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) Head Thomas Lembong and other ministers during a meeting in Yogyakarta on Thursday (March 15).
During a meeting with Jokowi, Feldman stated that Indonesia remains an attractive market for international investors, amid a number of challenges still faced by the country.
"Our goal is to help increase investment in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, and work together to promote Indonesia as an investment destination for the US," he noted.
The council continues to observe the obstacles and business opportunities between the US and Indonesia. One of the challenges in conducting business cooperation today is related to data and regulatory information in each region.
However, Feldman realized that the regulation was established to protect the competitiveness of business people in Indonesia.
