Stop speculating on Ba'asyir's house arrest: Wiranto

Wiranto says Ba'asyir will not get amnesty, clemency or under house arrest.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Minister Wiranto asked the people to stop the speculation over Abu Bakar Ba'asyir fate. The convicted terrorist was rumored to be released from prison and put under house arrest.

He asserted the government has decided to move Ba'asyir from a prison in Gunung Sindur, Bogor, West Java to a prison in Central Java. "So far, there will be no house arrest, amnesty, or clemency for him," Wiranto said on Tuesday (March 6). 

Wiranto explained the decision to relocate Ba'asyir detention was based on humanity. Ba'asyir is considered very old and his physical as well as health condition has also declined.

"The decision made during the coordination meeting and also we have reported it to the president. Due to humanitarian consideration, we will move him to detention center in Central Java, near from Ba'asyir home," said Wiranto.

He said the cleric will get all medical treatments needed. He will be rushed to the hospital by helicopter if necessary.

"We prioritized his health without neglecting the legal aspect. So Ba'asyir will not be under a house arrest or hospital, but still at detention center near from his hometown," Wiranto explained.

Wiranto said Ba'asyir relatives can easily visit and communicate with the prisoner. However, he affirmed the treatment for Baasyir would remain same as the other prisoners, as well as for supervision for him.

South Jakarta District Court judge sentenced cleric Ba'asyir to 15 years in prison in 2011. The Assembly assessed ustaz Ba'asyir proved to create an atmosphere of terror with holding military training at Bukit Jalin Jantho, Aceh.

The Assembly also assessed Ba'asyir proved to plan military training with Dulmatin. They discussed the plan near al Mukmin Ngruki Boarding School in Solo, Central Java, in February 2009. The 80 years old man jailed in solitary confinement at Mount Sindur prison, Bogor to live the remaining period of the sentence.
