REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) in Jakarta said it will reduce idle time of its trains. To realize it, KAI planned to increase frequency of services for short routes in Java.
Executive Vice President of Jakarta's branch of KAI Dadan Rudiansyah, said trains serving long distance routes could use idle time to serve busy short distance routes like Jakarta-Bandung and Jakarta-Cirebon.

"For example, train from Yogyakarta arriving in Jakarta early morning is to leave Jakarta only for Yogyakarta at night. The train could be used the time span to serve transport to Bandung or Cirebon and back to Jakarta before leaving to Yogyakarta at night," Dadan said.
Maintenance , however, is important to make sure that the train is fit after the tight schedules, he said.
Many travelers still prefer railway transport because of the heavy traffic jams in the toll road between Jakarta and Bandung, he said.
KAI had transported some 4.85 million passengers during Christmas and the New Year 2018 festivities. The number of passengers recorded at 4.85 million during Christmas and the New Year 2018 festivities, which lasted from December 22, 2017, to January 7, 2018, increased by five percent compared with that during the corresponding period last year.
