Earlier on Monday, a 27-year-old man detonated a low-tech bomb strapped to his body at around 7:20 a.m. local time at a subway station at Times Square, near the Port Authority bus terminal, seriously wounding himself and injuring three others.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio called it an attempted terrorist attack.

The police have identified the suspect as Akayed Ullah and taken him into custody.

Following the incident, the Indonesian consulate general has called on Indonesians in New York and its surrounding cities to step up vigil, especially while visiting public places.

The KJRI has also called on Indonesians to carry their identification documents while traveling in the city and abide by the local laws and instructions of security officers.

The KJRI will continue to monitor the situation in the city.
