REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Reclamation islets could be used for areas to develop new and renewable energy sources, Mining Engineering Lecturer at University of Proklamasi 45, Sigit Cahyono said. The government, he added, could build such as Solar Power Plant (PLTS) in one of the islets.

"In one of the reclamation islets, a PLTS can be built, for example in G islet, with an area of about 160 hectares it will generate more than 100 MW of electricity, which is very significant in supporting the 35,000 MW program," Sigit said on Sunday (October 15).

Another interesting idea, according to Sigit, was to build Waste Power Generation (PLTSa) in one of reclamation islets. He said, it will generate large amounts of electricity while reducing the problem of garbage accumulation in Bantar Gebang garbage dump or final disposal sites (TPA).

"This idea also can open new jobs opportunities for fishermen who lost their livelihood due to the reclamation of the island," Sigit explained.

The central government officially lifted its moratorium on the Jakarta Bay reclamation project through an announcement letter issued by the office of Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister on October 5.

Coordinating Maritime Affairs Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan later said if all parties, including new government of DKI Jakarta must accept his decision.

Previously, Urban analyst at Trisakti University, Nirwono Yoga once also said the choice to dismanle islands number C D, and G was not very realistic. He assessed DKI Jakarta' provincial's government should searched for win-win solution for the three islands, such as to make those islets to be useful.

Meanwhile, related to concept of Giant Sea Wall (GSW) Sigit said if it continues, it would be more meaningful if accompanied by utilization as tidal energy. Eventhough, its energy potential is not too big.

"We can protect the coastal areas of Jakarta and on the other hand produces the much needed energy of this country," Sigit added.
