Floods submerge 254 houses in West Sumatra

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PAINAN -- Floods triggered by heavy rains submerged 325 houses in Pesisir Selatan District, West Sumatra Province, on Wednesday.

"In Lagan Gadang Mudiak and Punggasan, Linggo Sari Baganti sub-district, 235 homes were submerged in waist-deep floodwaters," local resident Muis stated on Thursday.

The floods not only inundated houses but also destroyed some 25 hectares of paddy fields in the sub-district, with material losses estimated at hundreds of millions of rupiah.

No fatalities or injuries were reported.

The floodwaters began receding at around 3 a.m. local time on Thursday as the rains stopped.

He remarked that the flooding this time was the biggest this year.

Early, this year, floods had also inundated the area.

Wednesday's floods were caused by the Batang Punggasan River overflowing its banks. As a result, several residents of the sub-district were forced to take refuge at their relatives' houses.

Chief of the emergency and logistics section of the Pesisir Selatan District Mitigation Board (BPBD) Su'ib Tanjung stated that heavy rains on Wednesday evening caused flooding and landslides in several areas in the district.

"However, we do not know how many houses and sub-districts are affected by the floods and landslides that occurred on Wednesday," he added.
