Governmental offices inundated as floods surround Jakarta

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - As rain falls across Jakarta since Thursday morning, flood continues to surround Jakarta and its vicinity. Water level of Ciliwung River is increasing making the level of Manggarai flood gate surpass the alert limit, which is 950 centimeters.

The inundated Jakarta caused traffic jam inevitable. Many offices including the office of Ministry of Economy, and Constitutional Court are inundated while floods forced the Constitutional Court is forced to cancel its session. 

Local Disaster Management (BPBD) warns inhabitants of Jakarta to avoid unnecessary outdoor activities and remove valuable documents and electronic equipments to safer places. 

Head of National Board for Disaster Management (BNPB), Syamsul Maarif, reported the current condition to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). SBY urged BNPB to monitor the condition and find solution to the problems.

Spokesman of BNPB, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, said BNPB and Ministry of Public Work had built several shelters for victims.

Coordinating Minister of Politics, Laws and Security, Djoko Suyanto, asked police chief and commander to help local government to build the shelters, provide transportation for evacuation and coordinate with local officials.

Presidential Spokesman, Julian Aldrin Pasha, said the president had instructed police chief to manage traffic and secure houses, while armed forces commander was instructed to help sending boat and health workers.
