REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The first museum batik ever built in Indonesia, Museum Batik Yogyakarta, was recognized by Indonesian Government in May 12, 1979. The museum was built as an effort to preserve the priceless cultural heritance of Indonesia.
"Museum Batik does not only have vast collections of batik, but also conserve batik by providing education and course on batik making," the curator of Museum Batik Yogyakarta, Prayogo, said on Monday.
The museum also has batik made in 17th century. "In Indonesia, batik was initially made in East Java. Then, Majapahit brought it to Central Java," he explained.
The museum collects around 1,500 batik fabric and thousands of batik patterns. "We are glad that our batik is recognized by UNESCO. But we are also sad because many people prefer to wear printed batik than written batik," he said.
