REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Muslim preacher Abdul Somad asserted that suicide bombers in Surabaya could not be classified as shaheed. He said they misunderstood the meaning of martyrdom by killing other religious believers.

Ustaz Somad explained that one could only be said shaheed if he/she died in a battlefield against infidels who tried to destroy Islam, not in a peaceful country like in Indonesia. Therefore, suicide bombers in Surabaya did not died as martyrs.

He put Palestine as example. Palestine is a war zone, ustaz Somad said. Palestinians committed suicide to attack Israeli troops. "They died as martyrs," he said during a sermon in Riau, on Tuesday (May 15).

According to ustaz Somad, Prophet Muhammad PBUH said Muslims who died during the Battle of Uhud against Quraish infidels will meet the Prophet in heaven for martyrdom. Hearing the word of the Prophet, Muslim troops became more courageous to enter the battlefield.

Ustaz Somad then clarified a video of his lecture that has been edited by an irresponsible party. He was accused to have motivated people to commit suicide.

"The video of my lecture was cut off," he said.

A series of suicide bombing rocked Surabaya in the last two days. On Monday morning, a family of five used two motorcycle to ride into the Surabaya police headquarter and exploded themselves just in the front enterence gate of the office. No fatality among the police officers but four were injured.

On Sunday in similar terrorist attacks, a man and his wife and two sons and two daughters were all killed in suicide bombings targeting three Christian churches. The incidents left 18 people killed including the family of six.

On Sunday night an alleged terrorist was killed in an accident in his house in the city. The bomb held by the alleged terrorist exploded before it was used for a certain target killing himself, his wife and two of his four children.

The series of terror attacks in Surabaya occured following a bloody riot only three days earlier caused by around 150 terrorist suspects breaking their cells and killing five police officers in Depok, West Java.
