REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), Indonesia's largest Islamic organization, has offered condolences to the people of Saudi Arabia on the death of King Abdullah early on Friday (23/1).

"NU's big family offers condolences over the death of King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who is a moderate Muslim," Secretary General of the NU Executive Board (PBNU) Marsudi Syuhud stated here on Friday.

According to him, King Abdullah was a moderate figure who played an active role in fostering religious harmony.

"He set up an institution to promote religious harmony. The king also made new policies on education," Syuhud revealed.

King Abdullah was born in Riyadh in 1924 as one of the dozens of sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, King Abdul-Aziz Al Saud. Abdullah was named the crown prince in 1982 on the day his half-brother Fahd bin Abdulaziz Al Saud ascended to the throne. When Fahd died in 2005, Abdullah officially rose to the throne.

Abdullah is succeeded by his brother Salman bin Abdulaziz, believed to be 79 years of age.
