MUI expects to take leading part in halal certification

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesian Council of Ulama (MUI) expects the institution still have the leading role in halal certification process. Government could play roles in socializing, regulating and monitoring, Chairman of MUI, Amihdan, said.

Amihdan said that MUI was the right insitution to lead the process. "If only government wants to participate, they can take part in post-certification," Amihdan said on Wednesday in the press release, explaining that MUI and the Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs and Cosmetics (LPPOM) were one step ahead.

LPPOM MUI has provided online halal certification in which LPPOM will send the auditor to the respective company. The during the visit to Amihda, head of PKS faction, Hidayat Nur Wahid, said PKS supported MUI to take the lead in making the edict of halal and haram. "Government can play some roles in socializing, monitoring, and regulating the halal certification," he said. Wahid also asked MUI to communicate with other factions to get more supports.
