REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has invited the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) member states to unite to defend Palestine.

"I invite all OIC members to stand united on the decision to defend Palestine. I hope the members would also make joint and individual efforts to support Palestine," Widodo remarked in a press conference held here on Tuesday.

Widodo boarded the presidential aircraft Indonesia-1 to travel to Istanbul in Turkey to attend the OIC Special Summit.

Widodo will express the joint protest of the Indonesian government and its people to the US' unilateral foreign policy decision.

"This is an opportunity for the OIC member states to come together and strongly refuse the decision taken by US President Trump that recognizes Jerusalem as the capital city of Israel," Widodo stated.

The OIC meeting will be held on Wednesday (Dec 13) and will be attended by several heads of state.

Widodo expressed hope that the meeting would result in concrete resolutions to build world peace, especially to handle the Palestine dispute.

Several officers accompanying the president and First Lady Iriana to Istanbul were Minister of Politics, Law, and Security Wiranto and Minister of State Secretary Pratikno.

Meanwhile, Minister of Foreign Affairs Retno Marsudi has arrived in Istanbul to hold the OIC ministerial meeting.

Marsudi had met Palestinian Foreign Affairs Minister Riyad Al Maliki to discuss issues related to Jerusalem City.

Both ministers also discussed the results of the Arab League ministerial meeting.

Indonesia is optimistic that the OIC Special Summit would be able to garner concrete support to free the Palestinians from Israeli colonialism.
