REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- The government's plan to evacuate 1,000 Gazans, Palestinians to Indonesia has its pros and cons from the public. In this regard, the General Chairman of the Central Leadership (PP) of Muhammadiyah Haedar Nashir spoke.
Haedar understands what President Prabowo Subianto said about the evacuation not as a goal of permanent relocation, but as a form of humanitarian aid for the victims of the conflict in Gaza. He delivered Muhammadiyah in line and supported Prabowo's plan as long as it was not permanent.
“(Muhammadiyah) is in line, the important thing is there is no controversy. Secondly, (this evacuation) is not permanent, and not in the same concept as offered by (US President) Trump,” Haedar told reporters at the PP Muhammadiyah office in Yogyakarta on Tuesday (22/4/2025).
“(This evacuation) is in order to serve his health and safety, even some can be blamed for later in time to be returned to his homeland, Palestine,” he added.
Gazans evacuated to Indonesia won't be many either. After all, only injured citizens will be chosen.
Haedar therefore hopes that all sides can understand each other and be tolerant of the diversity of ways to defend the Palestinians. “There are diplomatic ways, political ways, but also solutions and realistic humanitarian ways,” he said.
Haedar ensures that Muhammadiyah is always ready to cooperate with the government and all elements of society in an effort to support the Palestinian people. Muhammadiyah has also long been active in helping the Palestinian people through various forms of humanitarian assistance, such as sending doctors to Gaza, providing education for Palestinian students in Indonesia, and building madrasahs for refugee children in Beirut.
“Let us not contradict each other that ultimately we cannot mobilize our positive energy for Palestine. I believe this is the tradition in the life of our nation,” he said.
Nevertheless, he reminded that a long-term diplomatic and political approach must remain a priority, including maintaining unity of stance among Palestinian independence groups.
“Political measures must certainly also be of concern to governments with an active free political spirit, and proactively seeking solutions. If by and large all countries agree on a two-state solution, two states that can stand in dignity, sovereignty, and side by side, I believe we will continue to push for it. But measures that can solve the problem of a temporary nature don't hurt either,” he said.
Earlier, Prabowo had planned to temporarily relocate 1,000 Gazans to Indonesia. The plan was submitted before he made his trip to five Middle Eastern countries. According to Prabowo, the evacuation was only temporary. Refugees will be returned to Gaza when conditions in the region improve.
