REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Chairman of the Indonesian Ulema Assembly (MUI) for Foreign Relations and International Cooperation Prof Sudarnoto Abdul Hakim assesses the willingness of President Prabowo Subianto to evacuate 1,000 Gazans to Indonesia, must be seen from the perspective of handling a humanitarian emergency.
Sudarnoto's statement was related to President Prabowo Subianto's visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Turkey, Egypt, Qatar and Jordan. Before leaving, Prabowo confirmed that his visit this time was aimed at evacuating 1,000 Gazans to Indonesia for treatment in Indonesia.
According to Prabowo, Indonesia will implement the plan while getting a “green light” from all parties, including countries that are currently actively helping the Palestinians in Gaza.
Sudarnoto explained that this emergency evacuation to Indonesia, which has actually taken place so far. The refugees were then accommodated in Jordan and Egypt, done specifically for children, women and those who were victims of Israel's abomination for medical treatment.
Indonesia has opportunities for medical emergency management for children, women and these groups because Indonesia has a large number of hospitals. “Islamic institutions such as Muhammadiyah or NU and others can also play a role because they have hospitals,” Sudarnoto told Republika on Thursday (10/4/2025).
He explained that Prabowo's plan was nothing like US President Donald Trump's crazy idea of resettling Gazans. Therefore, evacuation must go through procedures and mechanisms that guarantee the equality of Gazans in Indonesia, while undergoing medical treatment. Not only that, there must be a guarantee that Palestinian land will remain an independent land, will not be expropriated and owned by any state.
“Indonesia should still reject the idea of relocation as proposed by Trump because it is energetically imperialistic and will even create a new humanitarian crisis,” he said.
