Muhammadiyah Optimizes Waqf Land to Support Free Nutritious Meals Program

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The 2nd National Working Meeting (Rakernas) of the Central Leadership Council of Muhammadiyah (MPW) decided on the urgency of allocating waqaf land to support the implementation of the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program of the government of President Prabowo and Vice President Gibran.

Chairman of Muhammadiyah Central Waqf Advisory Assembly, Buya Amirsyah Tambangan said that Muhammadiyah has waqf assets of 21,000 hectares. Most of it is empty land in the countryside. All of that will be optimized into a source of food production to supply the needs of the government's nutritious eating program.

“The allocation of waqf land for this nutritious eating program will be focused on the development of agriculture, animal husbandry, fisheries and the opening of hygienic public kitchens,” Buya Amirsyah said in a written message received by Republika on Monday (4/11/2024).

Rakernas also ensures that the waqf land management program should be community-based with community participation. With this approach, it allows, in addition to being able to meet the needs of nutritious food, the cultivation of waqf land will be able to add economic value to the residents around the program.

“We will work quickly, in November 2024 we will analyze and map the potential of the land for the implementation of the program. Conducting consolidation, drawing up strategic plans and incubation for all waqf managers in the area. We hope that by the beginning of 2025 this program can be realized,” said Buya Amirsyah, who also serves as Secretary General of the Indonesian Ulama Assembly (MUI).

In addition to supporting the Free Nutritious Meals program, Rakernas Majlis Wakaf Muhammadiyah also formulated a program for building community education centers and strategic sector economic development in leveraging waqf assets throughout Indonesia.

The 2nd Rakernas of Muhammadiyah Waqf Assembly was held at Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on November 2-3, 2024. The Rakernas decided that the program of nutritious eating through the cultivation of waqf land became one of the national strategic programs.
