REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Prophet Muhammad SAW passed away on Monday of Rabiul Awal, the 11th year of Hijri. Although the date is not disputed, the exact date is still subject to debate among historians.
Some state the date of the 2nd Rabiul Awal. Some say the date is 12 Rabiul Awal.
To be sure, the Prophet's glorious body was buried the day after his death. The funeral procession took place at noon on Tuesday. According to the current calendar, his age was 63 years old.
People bathed the body of the Prophet Muhammad without removing the clothes from his glorious body (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Conducting the procession was his nephew, Ali bin Abi Thalib. The water used comes from the Ghars well located in Quba. Ali was assisted by al-'Abbas and his son, al-Fadhl.
After that, a procession of shrouds. To this end, they covered the noble body of the Prophet with three strands of white cotton cloth. Not wearing braces and head coverings.
After that, his body was placed on a bed in the house of the Prophet and 'Aisha. The house was the place where the Messenger of Allah (SAW) met his death.
There was a discussion about where the body of the Prophet (PBUH) would be buried. Some suggest that his body be buried in Makkah. In fact, some have proposed another city, namely Baitul Makdis in Palestine.
Abu Bakr said, “I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying, 'No prophet died except to be buried where he was taken away.'” Ali bin Abi Thalib confirmed Abu Bakr's statement.
So put it all together, the body of the Prophet (PBUH) will be buried where he breathed his last breath. Abu Thalhah Zaid bin Sahal al-Anshari dug the ground below where the Prophet (peace be upon him) died.
There were four men who put the noble body in the ground. They were Ali ibn Abi Thalib, al-'Abbas, al-Fadhl, and Qutsam ibn 'Abbas. Muawiyah ibn Abu Sufyan, who witnessed the procession, was greatly grieved.
He then quietly dropped his ring on the body of the Prophet. When the four men were about to fill his grave with earth, Muawiyah said, “My ring fell in there. Let me take it.”
Ali allowed it too.
In the burrow, Muawiyah not only took his ring, but also kissed the Prophet's forehead. After that, he went up again.
Also present in this funeral procession, Mughirah ibn Shu'bah. He saw what Muawiyah was doing. Then there was a desire to get the same opportunity.
Mughirah deliberately dropped his ring into the tomb of the Prophet. So he asked Ali to be allowed to take it.
Ali allowed it. Mughirah went down there and found the body of the Prophet (SAW) once more.
“Truly, I want to be the last man to touch the Messenger of Allah,” Mughirah bin Shu'bah said.
After the burrow was filled with earth, Bilal ibn Rabah, carrying a vessel, sprinkled water on the tomb. From the direction of his head, he sprinkled the grave of the Prophet with pebbles he had obtained from the courtyard of his house. Finally, his grave was slightly elevated, as if it were a little off the ground.
