REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stated that the decline in the number of middle economic class population that occurred between 2019 and 2024 is not only in Indonesia. According to him, the phenomenon also affected many countries around the world.
“It's a problem that occurs in almost all countries, because the global economy is falling all over,” Jokowi said after inaugurating the Hospital Respiration Building of Friendship Hospital, East Jakarta, Friday (30/8/2024).
The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) noted that in 2019, the middle class population in Indonesia reached 57.33 million. That number declined in the past five years to reach 47.85 million by 2024, or a decrease of 9.48 million people.
The decrease in the number of middle-class people occurred due to the decline in the performance of the manufacturing sector in the country. Jokowi said that the phenomenon is a challenge in many countries that are influenced by two factors.
First, the global economic downturn and secondly the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic that lasted the last two to three years. He explained that the crisis has created various economic difficulties in many countries. “All countries today are in the same predicament,” Jokowi said.
According to the press release of Kemenko PMK, the Indonesian government is committed to addressing welfare issues with various strategic policies. Such efforts include strengthening the SME sector, increasing investment in education and health, and economic reforms to create broader opportunities for people.
With some of those measures, the government hopes to stimulate inclusive economic growth. The number of poor people can be reduced.
