REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA — Garbage accumulation began to occur in Yogyakarta City after the 2024 Lebaran holiday. The municipal government (Pemkot) said that this buildup began to occur since April 16.

“A pile of garbage began to appear when entering after Lebaran. Because when the Lebaran holiday is safely controlled, it means that we have vacated the depot position before entering the Lebaran holiday, and we comb it every morning, and start sighting (piles) on April 16 at some point, and then expand,” said Acting Mayor of Yogyakarta, Singjik Raharjo not long ago.

Singjik said that it continues to carry out combing to pick up the accumulation of garbage found at a number of points in Yogyakarta. In addition, it also optimizes the warehouse to avoid a larger accumulation of garbage.

“We also then took steps to further optimize, both in the depot and the cleaning on the streets we optimize, hoping not to interfere with the activities of the community itself,” Singjik said.

Singjik said that on April 24, it went viral related to people dumping garbage around the Ngasem depot until there was a buildup. Although, according to Singjik it can be seen from two sides.

According to him, public awareness has begun to increase to throw garbage into the depot. This means that people no longer throw garbage on the street or in the river until there is pollution of the river water.

“My enthusiasm is also to see that people who have not reached the depot have started throwing (garbage), when the distance from the fork to the depot is only 50 meters. This is the dynamic in society, but then I took the wisdom of those two points of view,” he said.

Nevertheless, Singghih said his side had changed the schedule of the depot in Ngasem to 05.00 pm. That way, people can dump their trash in the depot early in the morning.

Singjik is also unfortunate that there are still large piles of garbage in a number of depots, such as in Gejayan. In fact, in some other places, such as in the corner of the sidewalk, there are still piles of garbage. The party must also comb the garbage heap, and pick up the existing garbage piles one by one.

“I especially appeal to the residents of Yogya City not to panic because we will really carry out the decentralization of garbage. Please follow the patterns and scheduling that we have created, and let's be really orderly in disposing of garbage because garbage is our shared responsibility,” Singjik said
