REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Ulama Assembly (MUI) says it has no authority to issue a list of Israeli-affiliated products. However, MUI still encourages Muslim consumers to actively conduct their own research on the list of products that should be boycotted.
“Stakeholders such as governments, relevant ministries and non-structural institutions can actively participate in providing literacy to the public by opening data and information about which products are affiliated, and mentioning clear sources, it does not matter,” MUI KH Deputy Secretary General Arif Fakhruddin said in an official statement in Jakarta, some time ago.
According to Arif, MUI allows boycotting institutions or societies to conduct research, with the aim of proving whether a product is affiliated with Israel or not. MUI also appealed to the public to use a list of Israeli-affiliated products from a clear source as a reference for boycott action.
“In order to carry out a massive pro-Israel product boycott movement,” Arif said in a press release in Jakarta on Monday (15/4/2024).
In line with MUI's instructions, the Indonesian Muslim Consumer Foundation (YKMI) has made a list of 10 multinational companies recommended for boycott, including Israeli dates. “One of the references is data from Boycott.TheWitness and Bdnaash sites,” said YKMI Executive Director Ahmad Himawan.
In addition to the most popular Boycott.TheWitness and Bdnaash sites in Indonesia, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement sites have long been actively sharing links encouraging boycott calls against Israeli-affiliated products. BDS through the website bdsmovement.net helped drive the boycott campaign launched by the Turkish Consumers Association.
Checking Israeli-affiliated products today is actually very easy. For example, consumers using mobile phones can check the links of global companies through the 'No Thanks' App. Nevertheless, intimidation efforts against pro-Israel boycott sites and applications continue. The No Thanks app once disappeared from the Google Play Store.
MUI Chairman of Foreign Relations and International Cooperation, Prof. Sudarnoto conveyed the reasons for the importance of the boycott movement of Israeli-affiliated products. He said MUI called for a boycott to weaken Israel's economy so as not to attack Palestinians again.
“Why the Boycott? Because of the proceeds of the sale, it must have been given its benefits to Israel. Because this is with a boycott, then we can weaken the Israeli economy so that it does not strike again,” Prof. Sudarnoto said in the Buya Hamka Hall of the MUI Office, Central Jakarta on March 10, 2024.
