REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) stressed the importance of careful management of the economy and the state's revenue and spending budget (APBN) to maintain the country's stability. He also hopes that the next government can maintain economic and political stability.

“Managing our economy, managing our state budget. We expect the new government to do the same in the future, be careful in managing a country as large as Indonesia,” Jokowi said at the opening of the Muhammadiyah Student Union (IMM) XX Year 2024 in Palembang, South Sumatra, Friday (1/3/2024) evening.

He reminded that Indonesia is a large country with a population of almost 280 million. So any action of any kind must be taken carefully.

“Because Indonesia is not a small country, but a very large country, a very large country, and the population is already almost 280 million, so any action we must take is especially careful in managing the economy, politics. It must be full of caution so as not to make mistakes in managing the country,” Jokowi said.

In his speech, Jokowi also stressed the importance of downstream industries and prudence in managing the national economy amid global challenges. Despite severe global challenges and the world's political and economic landscape changing dynamically, Jokowi said, Indonesia has a great chance of leapfrogging into a developed country.

According to Jokowi, the big challenges that must be faced can actually give rise to opportunities.

“It's not like I can jump right away, but the challenge is also huge. Therefore, I give an example as previously presented by Adinda Abdul Musawir Yahya, downstream,” Jokowi said.

He also exemplified downstream efforts, such as the construction of the smelter industry by PT Freeport and the nickel industry, which have increased the added value of the economy. The move also simultaneously created jobs.

“Let me give you another example of the second, nickel. Built smelter industry. When we export crude for years, exports hold back the value of nickel ore every year our exports are approximately Rp 30 trillion. Once the smelter is built, our exports reach Rp 510 trillion,” said the former DKI governor.
