The Ministry of Foreign Affairs Continues to Strengthen the Indonesian Protection System

The last nine years the issue of WNI protection has become a foreign political priority.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG -- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs continues to strengthen the protection system of Indonesian citizens (WNI) abroad as one of the priorities of diplomacy conducted during the administration of President Joko Widodo.

“Over the past nine years, the issue of WNI protection has always been placed as one of the foreign political priorities. The paradigm of the way of thinking and service was changed significantly,” said Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi.

This was stated by Minister of Foreign Affairs (PPTM) 2024 Annual Press Statement held at Gedung Merdeka, Bandung, Monday (8/1/2024).

According to him, efforts to strengthen the legal instruments of WNI protection are carried out through the issuance of laws and Regulations of the Minister of Foreign Affairs. A number of innovations also continue to be made to improve the protection services of WNI.

In this regard, Retno said, a comprehensive protection system has been built and strengthened, among other things, by establishing the Indonesian Seafarer Corner for WNI shipmen (ABK) in Cape Town, Montevideo, and Kaohsiung; strengthening the WNI Protection Law Team in countries with a high concentration of WNI; drawing up contingency plans in countries with a risk of conflict; and prioritizing WNI protection curricula in education diplomat.

“Kemlu has also carried out a number of digital innovations protecting WNI, including building SMS blast system, WNI Care Portal, and Safe Travel mobile application,” said Minister Retno.

PPTM 2024 raised the theme “Advancing Free and Active Foreign Policy: A Ten Year Journey. “In this PPTM, Foreign Minister Retno conveyed the achievements of Indonesia's diplomacy about the past nine years and the priorities of diplomacy for almost the next year.
