REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Prophet Muhammad has given an example of how to make our possessions a blessing. That is, by spending a portion of our possessions in the way of Allah, whether it be by bestowal, fornication, or waqaf.

The Prophet filled his days with alms, and even more alms during the holy month of Ramadan. In fact, the Messenger of Allah bestows mercy not only on those who have embraced Islam, in a number of histories and also the books of the Sirah it is mentioned that the Messenger of Allah had a habit of giving thanks to a blind man who hated the apostle so much. The blind man daily chided the maki apostle without knowing what the figure of the apostle looked like.

Every day the Messenger of Allah came to the blind man, and the Messenger kissed the blind man with his own hand. But the blind man did not know that the one who always gave him food every day was the Messenger of Allah. The blind man only knew everything when the Messenger of Allah died. Until he converted and embraced Islam.

Therefore, as a Muslim, one must obey the Messenger of Allah by being generous, giving away wealth for good in the way of Allah. Especially for those who have excess possessions. Do not be hungry for possessions. Because the nature of the hunk will bring perdition. And indeed every human being will be held accountable for his property. Woe therefore to those who waste their wealth in charity, and do not give alms, and fornicate, and worship.

As Allah says Subhanahu wa Ta'ala in At-Taubah verse 180:

Let not those who are hungry for the riches which God has given them from His bounty think that the bounty is good for them. The truth is that it is bad for them. The treasure they lost will be wrapped around his neck on the Day of Resurrection. And to Allah belongs all the inheritance in the heavens and the earth. God knows what you do.

This is also stated in the letter of At Taubah verses 34-35:

O you who believe, most of the Jewish scholars and the monks of the Nazarenes actually ate the property of men in a wicked way, and they obstruct (men) from the way of Allah. And those who keep gold and silver, and do not give them away in the way of Allah, tell them that they will have a painful torment (34) on the day when the silver gold was heated in hell, and their foreheads, their hulls, and their backs were burned with it, and it was said to them, “This is your treasure, which you have kept for yourselves, now feel the consequences of this. What are you keeping?” (35)
