REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA— Surat Ar-Rahman has a number of privileges either in terms of merit and benefits of reading it or in terms of its language. One such idiosyncratic example is the form of repetition present in the Ar-Rahman letter.

فَبِأَيِّ آَلَاءِ رَبِّكُمَا تُكَذِّبَانِ

The sentence is repeated 31 times in Surah ar-Rahman. The meaning of this verse is: Then which favor of your Lord do you deny? This phrase is addressed to the nation of jinn and man.

In the Surah ar-Rahman, Allah mentions the many favors that He bestowed upon jinn and men so that they might be grateful and not disbelieve in them. The many favors that Allah bestows are indicative of His power and mercy, which has rightly been made the only one worthy to be worshiped.

As for the wisdom behind the repetition of this verse, among other things, as we know that the Quran is revealed in Arabic and among its styles of delivery (uslub) is repetition (tikrar) to strengthen the impression and deepen the understanding of the verse.

As-Suyuthi in his book al-Itqan fi Ulumil Qur'an mentions that it is to consolidate understanding, to exert pressure on the problems described, to remind them, and to show how great and important the problem is.

It is the same as the words of someone to whom he always helps, but he denies it. Were you not a poor man then I gave you treasure, did you deny it?

Didn't you have clothes before then I gave you clothes, and did you deny that? Language styles like this are commonly used in Arabic.

Then, the repetition of this verse aims to remind the servant to always remember and give thanks to Allah without having to wait and count God's blessings that cannot be counted.
