REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA — Prophet Muhammad and his companions sanctified Masjid Haram from hundreds of idols during the conquest of Makkah city.
As quoted from the History of the Life and Struggle of the Messenger of Allah extracted from the book of ar-Rahiq al-Makhtum, the Prophet entered the Masjid al-Haram surrounded by his companions from Muhajirin and Anshar. Then he headed for Hajar Aswad and rubbed him. Then he thawed while holding a bow.
At that time there were 360 idols in the Kabah, so he pushed them with his bow and read: And say, “The truth has come and the wrong is gone.” Indeed, that falsehood is something that must vanish. (al-Isra 81)
At that time he was doing thawaf on his animals but not in the state of ihram, hence he was only thawaf. He then called Uthman ibn Taihah, the key holder of the Kabah, and asked him to open it.
Then he got into it. In it he saw pictures, among them the images of the Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail Alaihimassalam who were choosing fate with arrows, and he said, “May Allah fight them (the pagans), for Allah's sake the two (Prophet Ibrahim and Ismail) never did this at all.”
He also saw in the Kabah a dove made of wood, which he broke with his hands, while drawing the picture he had ordered to be removed.
Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) performed prayers in the Kabah. Then he came out of the Kaaba while the Quraysh were waiting for what the Messenger of Allah would do. Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“There is no god but Allah, there is no ally for him. He who keeps his promises, helps His servants and only He destroys the power of the enemy. Know that every power, property, or blood is under these two feet, except the power to take care of the Kaaba and to give drink to the pilgrims of the Hajj...
“O Quraysh! Allah has taken away from you the pride of wickedness and the worship of the ancestors. Man of Adam and Adam of the earth. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) read the following verse:
““O mankind, We created you from a man and a woman, and made you into nations and tribes, that you might know one another. Indeed, the most noble among you in the sight of Allah is the most pious among you. Verily Allah is Mahamengetahui again Mahamengenal.” (QS al-Hujurat verse 13)
“O Quraysh? What do you think I will do to you? “. They replied, “Goodness, you are a noble brother, a son of a noble brother.”
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “I tell you what Joseph said to his brother: “On this day there is no vengeance for you.” Go, and you are free.”
Then the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) returned the keys of the Kabah to Uthman ibn Talhah. Then when the time of prayer had come, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered Bilal to go up to the Kaaba to proclaim the adzan.
