Deadly Cocktail Killed Scores in West Java

Police arrested a married couple suspected of selling the deadly liquor.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SUBANG — Residents killed allegedly as a result of consuming ilegal liquor in Subang Regency, West Java, reportedly increased. A number of residents were earlier rumored to be in critical condition.

“Plus one victim, the number is now 13 people dead,” said Subang Police Chief, AKBP Ariek Indra Sentanu, when confirmed on Tuesday (31/10/2023).

Inconnection with that case, police have arrested a married couple with the initials NN and RH who allegedly produced and sold the deadly coctail, know locally as "miras oplosan". Both were arrested in Bandung on Monday (30/10/2023).

The suspect is called ensnared by Article 204 of the Criminal Code and/or Article 146 paragraph 2 juncto Article 140 of Law No. 18 of 2012 on Food and or Article 62 paragraph 1 jo Article 8 paragraph 1 of Law No. 8 of 1999 on Consumer Protection. “Hopefully the casualties don't add up,” the police chief said.

Earlier, a number of residents allegedly consumed oplosan during a wedding event in Kampung Cipulus, Sagalaherang, Subang Regency, on Saturday (28/10/2023). “The victims gathered and bought alcoholic drinks or oplosan liquor in Kampung Jabong. The victims drank liquor at the wedding,” said the Head of Public Relations of the West Java Police Kombes Pol Ibrahim Tompo on Monday (30/10/2023).

After that, according to Ibrahim, a number of residents experienced health complaints and were immediately taken to the health center, then referred to Subang Hospital. A number of residents later died, while several others were in critical condition.
