RI-PNG border security task force confiscates protected bird

Four protected birds were seized from illegal hunters.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Indonesia-Papua New Guinea (PNG) border security task force has managed to confiscate four protected birds from residents of Mosso village, Jayapura City, Papua. Commander of the task force of Infantry Battalion (Yonif) PR 328 / DGH Major Inf Erwin Iswari stated that besides seizing the four protected birds, the authority also arrested two people suspected of illegal hunting.

"The Yonif PR 328 / DGH Border Security Task Force of Mosso personnel managed to arrest two residents carrying four protected birds, which were allegedly hunted illegally on Wednesday (Feb 6)," he noted here on Thursday.

According to him, the confiscation began after the Mosso Postal Commander (Danpos) First Lieutenant Arm Ilham received information from the Mosso Village Chief Agus Wefapua. The village chief told him that there were individuals who hunted birds in Mosso area.

The Mosso postal commander carried out sweeping raids on the basis of the information, he remarked.

"Finally at around 5:00 p.m., two motorcycles Honda Supra and Yamaha RX King passed by, each of which was driven by two villagers carrying items in sacks," he noted.

On inspecting the luggage, four birds protected by law, namely 1 White Parrot, 2 Parrot Tails and 1 Old Brother King, were seized. The four protected birds were brought by two people, with initials LR (34) West Koya residents and GE (60) Arso residents, he revealed.

Erwin emphasized that hunting protected animals was a crime.

"We immediately coordinated the findings with the authorities and the Papua Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) to hand over the animals to be returned to nature," he explained.
