REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BINTAN -- - A total 70 foreign yachts would participate in the Wonderful Sail Bintan in Bintan District, Riau Islands Province. The event to be held from Nov 3 to 7, Head of Bintan Tourism Office, Luki Zaiman, said.

The yachters joining the maritime tourism-related event, which would be held at Lagoi Bay tourist site, came from several countries, including Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia, and Singapore, he stated here on Thursday.

The event would also be enlivened by the performance of 50 jetski riders and a drone race, he noted, adding that the Wonderful Sail Bintan was expected to help introduce Bintan Island as a potential maritime tourist destination in Riau Islands Province.

The Wonderful Sail Bintan is one of the endeavors that the Tourism Ministry is making to lure more foreign tourist arrivals.

Last year, the Indonesian Tourism Ministry had even taken an initiative to promote the Wonderful Indonesia tourism brand to foreign and local yachters in New Zealand.

I Gde Pitana, deputy minister for International Marketing, remarked in a press statement that for decades, Auckland, Whangarei, and Opua have been the popular destinations for the world's yachters who transit in New Zealand.

"The yachters' experience has shown us that the best months for carrying out our promotion in New Zealand are March, April, or May because after that, they will continue their voyages to the north towards Sydney, Cairns, and Darwin. From Darwin to Asia, they pass by the Indonesian waters," Pitana noted.

Due to its great potentials in maritime tourism, Indonesia had also joined the world`s largest tourist exhibition, ITB Berlin (Internationale Tourismus-Borse Berlin) in March 2018.

Indonesian Ambassador to Germany, Arif Havas Oegroseno, explained that the archipelago's maritime tourism was highly in demand by European tourists.
