REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) alluded to the case of the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey, during a meeting with Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir at the Bogor Palace, Monday. Jokowi was optimistic that the investigation by the Saudi government would be conducted transparently.
"The president also presented the Jamal Khashoggi case by expressing concerns over the case," Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi stated after accompanying the president to receive the Saudi foreign minister.
Regarding this matter, the Saudi foreign minister informed the president of the statement conveyed before visiting Indonesia. Al-Jubeir remarked on Sunday that Saudi officials were unaware of the details of how Khashoggi was killed at their consulate in Istanbul.
He informed Fox News in an interview that Khashoggi was approached by the "Saudi security team" while entering the consulate and reports about what had happened thereafter differed from what the Turkish officials had stated and encouraged the Saudis to investigate.
"He was killed at the consulate. We do not know what the details are. We do not know where his body is," Jubeir noted.
"We are determined to expose every aspect. We are determined to punish those responsible for this murder," he stated.
Jubeir called Khashoggi's murder a terrible mistake. "This is a terrible tragedy. We express our condolences to them. We feel their grief," Jubeir stated in the interview.
Jubeir has guaranteed that the perpetrators will suffer the consequences.
