REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BREBES -- State-owned logistics firm (Bulog) president director Budi Waseso said there is a need for good synergy between the agency and entrepreneurs, banks and farmers groups in order to realize food security and food self-sufficiency in Indonesia. He assessed synergy is important because it could not be built solely by Bulog.

According to Budi or usually called as Buwas, Bulog is still keeping a breakthrough to realize food security and food self-sufficiency in Indonesia. He said someday the breakthrough will be launched.

“The breakthrough is still a secret, so the food mafia won’t know. We must be optimistic that food security and food self-sufficiency will be realized," Buwas said.

Buwas said one of the efforts that has been implemented to realize food security and food self-sufficiency is the construction of onion storage equipment. This storage has cooling technology, RH controllers, Co2, N2, and ethylene or ‘controlled atmosphere storage (CAS)’.

“During this time, we still import food commodities, but soon we can fulfill it independently,” Buwas added.

Meanwhile, Brebes Regent Idza Priyanti said with the establishment of red onion storage, many farmers can reduce operational costs. They also can eliminate the chain of commodities.

“Later, farmers can directly sell red onions to Bulog and store the commodity in CAS. It also can keep the stability of onion price when harvest and commodity prices plummet in markets,” Idza explained.
