Jokowi highlights development programs for West Sumatra

The govt will expand the capacity of Minangkabau International Airport.

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG -- President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) elaborated on several development programs initiated and implemented by the central government in West Sumatra Province. He stated that during a working visit here on Monday.

"I have recently inaugurated the Minangkabau International Airport railway heading to Padang (provincial capital city), and capacity of the airport terminal will then be expanded," he noted after distributing 510 waqf land certificates at the Jamiatul Huda Mosque in the city.

The head of state also remarked that the government, in the near future, will expand the capacity of Minangkabau International Airport that accommodates 2.7 million passengers per year.

"God willing, by the end of next year, we will have expanded the capacity of the terminal of Minangkabau airport to handle 5.7 million passengers (per year)," he remarked.

In addition, the government has built a road to the Mandeh (place of interest) in the Pesisir Selatan District to support tourism in the region. "It is expected to become a good tourist resort. I have visited the location that has amazing scenery, but the road infrastructure is inadequate," Jokowi stated.

In the meantime, he pointed out that development of the Padang toll road heading to Pekanbaru in Riau Province had begun, with the hopes that following completion, it would encourage economic growth in West Sumatra.

"West Sumatra's economy is now pretty good and with the development of infrastructure, it will become even better," the president stated, adding that the government will also step up the development of human resources, including their character, morals, and discipline.
