REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Chairman of the Democratic Party Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono who is also the sixth Indonesian president has praised Chief of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) Megawati Soekarnoputri. He assessed Megawati as a model of successful woman.

"Indonesian women could reach the same level of success as men. In executive institution, Indonesia had a female president, Megawati Soekarnoputri," Yudhoyono said in a seminar held to commemorate the international women's day here on Monday.

According to Yudhoyono, the fifth Indonesian president Megawati Soekarnoputri is a model for Indonesian woman who has gained her success. Megawati reached the top position as president.

Indonesian women, Yudhoyono said, could have bright career as those in developed countries. "We have many successful women in Indonesia, including Megawati who gained her success in executive institution," he said, adding that others are well-known figures in judicial institution, business, and civic services.

The former president has called on Indonesian women to continue their struggle to reach the success.

The government should create programs that would encourage women to improve their capacity, while already successful women should assist other women to gain the same success, he said.
