REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian Farmers Association (HKTI) has planned to hold the Asian Agriculture and Food Forum (ASAFF) at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) from June 27 to July 1, its chairman Gen. TNI (Ret) Moeldoko said. The event, which would be attended by representatives from 20 Asian countries, is aimed at strengthening Indonesia's food politics, Moeldoko stated here on Thursday.

"From the political aspect, the forum is expected to strengthen Indonesia's food resilience politics," he added.

HKTI should provide its contribution to the government to improve the country's food politics, including the relations between the government and farmers, food distribution, and its coverage, he noted.

"We hope that it could be a trigger, especially for Indonesia's food politics," Moeldoko remarked.

The association would be ready to participate in the efforts to build Indonesia as the strongest country in the region, with its vast territory, favorable weather, and its oceans that cover two-third of its area.

"From the economic aspect, the ASAFF would bridge farmers with global markets. The event would also become a business-to-business forum to yield something," he added.

The event, Moeldoko continued, would benefit the social, cultural, and tourism sectors, through an exhibition of local culinary.

"We have 714 ethnic groups. Each ethnic group could exhibit their local culinary, and the target is tourism sector," he remarked.

The event would serve as an alarm for the world to highlight food resilience as an important issue, in term of availability and source.

The ASAFF 2018 would present awards to young innovators in agriculture.

Among the participant countries in the event are Bahrain, Bangladesh, Brunei Darussalam, China, India, Iran, Japan, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Qatar, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Timor Leste, United Arab Emirates, and Vietnam.

The event would involve the Agriculture Ministry, Trade Ministry, Tourism Ministry, Industry Ministry, as well as other stakeholders in agriculture.
