REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Terrorism prisoner Abu Bakar Ba'asyir will be moved from a prison in Gunung Sindur, Bogor, West Java, to a prison in Central Java for a humanitarian reason as he is already very old and ailing. Coordinating minister for security, political and legal affairs Wiranto said the plan has already been approved. "It will be done in coordination with the ministry of justice and human rights," Wiranto said here on Monday.
He said the decision was made at a meeting at his office that day. "Just now we discussed about treatment for Abu Bakar Ba'asyir. Rumors (about it) have spread. The minister of defense has given his comment. The President has also given directives," he said.
Wiranto said that indeed the government had addressed the issue using a humanitarian approach. As he is already very old and his physical as well as health condition has also declined, the government has taken a discretion upon humanitarian reasons without necessarily violating laws to move him from Gunung Sindur, he explained.
"He will be moved to Central Java, close to his family and relatives so that he will be easily visited without necessarily relaxing security," Wiranto said.
He said Ba'asyir could be moved to Klaten or Solo but "will still be in a prison, not under a house arrest or a hospital."
He said by being moved closer to his family it is expected psychologically he would feel more peaceful and could be reached more easily. " You yourself would feel more comfortable when you are in your home town, aren't you?," he said.
Wiranto said that security as well as impact of his influence as a figure had already been taken into consideration. "All anticipatory measures have been taken into consideration. He will remain to be guarded so that he will not go anywhere. Because of his old age and for humanitarian reason we will move him," he said.
