Bio Farma supplies 70 percent of world's vaccine requirement

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- State-owned vaccine producer PT Bio Farma supplies 70 percent of the world's vaccine requirement, its Chief Executive Rahman Rustan has said. The company supplies vaccines to more than 130 countries, Rahman Rustan said in a written statement here on Monday.

Bio Farma wants to study potential cooperation in research or in production with friendly countries in the world, he said at a meeting with four Indonesian ambassadors representing four regions.

"So far we have cooperated through the UNICEF. Now we hope with the support of the ambassadors, access would be easier for bilateral cooperation," Rahman said.

The ambassadors included Indonesian ambassador to Iran and Turkmenistan representing Middle East, ambassador to Romania representing Europe,ambassador to Cambodia representing Southeast Asia and ambassador to Peru representing Latin America.

Rahman said most potential to be studied is herbal products with the country's great biodiversity for herbs.

"We are focusing on biotechnology, therefore, we want cooperation with other state owned pharmaceutical companies - Indofarma, Kimia Farma, and Phapros to carry out research on herbal products," he said.

Indonesian ambassador to Iran and Turkmenistan representing Middle East Octavino Alimudin said the Indonesian position as a producer of vaccines and serum has been internationally recognized through Bio Farma.
