REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) has provided public kitchens and increased disaster preparedness in villages to assist the victims of floods that have hit Jakarta following high-intensity rainfall. As an initial step, Kemensos has activated disaster preparedness units in 81 villages, conducted evacuation efforts, and established public kitchens that are managed by cadets on disaster alert (Tagana) along with the Jakarta Social Agency.

The public kitchens were set up among other things at Pejaten Timur Village in Pasar Minggu and Pengadegan Village in Pancoran, South Jakarta," ," Social Affairs Minister Idrus Marham stated here on Tuesday.

In addition, logistics assistance has been distributed to the flood victims since Monday night. The volume of water in Katulampa Dam in Bogor, West Java, has continued to increase, causing the Ciliwung River to overflow its banks and inundate East Jakarta's areas of Kampung Melayu on Monday.

Kampung Melayu Village Head Setiawan revealed on Monday that floods had affected four neighborhoods (RWs): RW 04, RW O5, RW 07, and RW O8. "Some parts of Kp Melayu areas are flooded. The water began to flood the areas at 3 a.m. local time," Setiawan stated.

Water levels in the flooded areas of Kampung Melau reached between 60 and 100 centimeters, but residents have not yet decided to evacuate.

Senior official of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency Sutopo Purwo Nugroho remarked in a press release that heavy rains had been falling since Sunday in the upstream areas of Ciliwung River in Bogor due to which the water level at Katulampa Dam in Bogor had reached 240 centimeters at 9:05 a.m. local time, as the Ciliwung River swelled significantly.

The Katulampa Dam was on Alert Level 1, or the highest level, Nugroho noted in a statement. An Alert Level 1 status was announced after the dam's water level reached above 200 centimeters, thereby increasing the potential of flooding in areas located near the Ciliwung River banks in Bogor, Depor, and Jakarta.
