26 patients being treated at Asmat General Hospital, church

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, TIMIKA -- A total of 26 patients suffering from malnutrition and measles are still undergoing intensive treatment at the Asmat General Hospital and Hall of the Indonesian Protestant Church of Asmat in Agats City, Papua Province. Head of Public Relations of the Papua Police Commissioner Kamal remarked here on Friday that as many as 24 patients comprising 21 suffering from malnutrition and three from measles were being treated at the hospital.

The two other malnourished patients are still being treated at the church hall. "Until now, the Integrated Task Force comprising personnel of the Indonesian National Police, Indonesian National Army, local government, National Search and Rescue Agency, and other agencies continue to undertake humanitarian activities to tackle cases of malnutrition and measles in Asmat region," he revealed.

From September 2017 to February 1, 2018, as many as 14,950 patients in Asmat region have received medical services in the form of vaccination. During this period, the task force team also treated 652 patients with measles, 223 malnourished patients, 11 patients with disease complications, and 25 people suspected of having measles.

Tens of thousands of residents were identified as living in 213 villages spread across 24 sub-districts.

Based on official data of the Integrated Task Force in Asmat District, during the period between September 2017 and January 1, 2018, a total of 72 deaths were recorded due to malnutrition and measles outbreaks comprising 37 people from Pulau Tiga Sub-district, 15 people from Fayit Sub-district, eight from Aswi Sub-district, and four from Akat Sub-district.

In addition, as many as eight patients died after being treated at the hospital. The hospital started offering inpatient treatment to patients in need of special attention, while inpatient services at the church hall were aimed at serving patients on the path to recovery.
