REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's biggest Islamic organization Nahdlatul Ulama has expressed condemnation to US President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

"Donald Trump's declaration that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel is an act that would disrupt and damage world peace," its general chairman Said Aqil Siroj said in a press statement received here on Thursday.

He said because of Trump's action situation in the world would be heated up leading to unceasing conflicts and therefore he strongly condemned the unilateral recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

"Jerusalem is not the capital of Israel but it is the capital of Palestine whose sovereignty we have recognized," he said.

According to Siroj, Trump's act would have the potential of spreading violations against principles of humanitarian law as regulated in Article 53 of Additional Protocol I of 1977 regarding protection of cultural objects and places of worship.

UN Resolutions on Jerusalem from Number 252 dated May 22, 1968 to Number 2334 dated December 23, 2016 asserts that UN Security Council will never recognize any kind of change on border lines that were determined before the 1967 war, he said

UN Resolution Number 2253 dated July 4, 1967 to Resolution Number 71 dated December 23, 2016 also in principle affirms protection of Jerusalem against Israeli occupation, he added.

Siroj said they have also been strengthened by Resolution Number 150 dated November 27, 1996 with UNESCO declaring "the old city of Jerusalem" as the threatened world heritage.

He said the development of a tunnel close to Al Aqsa Mosque by Israel has been considered as an act against religious feeling in the world.

Under the context, Sitoj said NU IN the 33rd conference in Jombang, East Java, has produced several decisions. Firstly, it supports Palestine's independence and in view of that has asked the UN to legitimize Palestinian state as officially UN member that has an equal right as other independent people and state.

Secondly NU has urged the UN to give sanctions politically as well as econmically to Israel and any country that ate not willing to end the occupation of the Palestinian land.

Thirdly, it calls on the Middle Eastern countries to unite to support the Palestinian independence and fourthly urges the Organization of Islamic Conference to intendively organize its members to support Palestinian indeprndence.

The executive board of NU has also urged the Indonesian government to take part and be proactive in helping solve problrms in Palestine, he said adding that the Ibdonesian government has a strategic role of to play to mediate political dynamics that are ongoing.

"Muslims in the world have been concern and so letbus pray together to God so that the Palestinian people are given strength and that peace will be created in Palestine," he said.
