REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice President Jusuf Kalla inaugurated the Red-and-White Gamma Irradiator facility and Radiofarma Radioisotope laboratory at the Serpong Research Center for Science and Technology in South Tangeran, Banten Province, on Wednesday.

"We must be proud of the Red-and-White Gamma Irradiator facility. This demonstrates that we are able to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes," Vice President Kalla noted during the inauguration on Wednesday.

The vice president further explained that Indonesia is currently facing several challenges but also provides numerous opportunities.

"One of them is how to provide food for 240 million people," the vice president remarked.

With the increase in population, Indonesia will need more land for housing, industry, and other areas. However, on the other hand, the need for food also increases.

"One solution is only through the use of technology and logistics support," the vice president said.

The vice president elaborated on a technology that can increase the shelf life of fruits, so they can be exported to foreign countries.

He pointed out that the research is important, but it should be in line with the needs of the industry, so that it can be of economic value.

"This must be promoted, so it can be sold to the industry. Thus, there will be incentives for researchers," he explained.

Some 84 percent of the Red-and-White Gamma Irradiator facility and the Radiofarma Radioisotope laboratory was made in Indonesia. This facility can be used for fruits, medicines, and cosmetics, among others.
