Please refrain to bring up sensitive issue: Tito Karnavian

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PURWOKERTO -- National Police Chief Gen. Tito Karnavian called on all parties not to raise sensitive issues as it could reopen old wound.

"Please refrain. Do not bring up sensitive issues in the middle of vulnerable situation ahead of simultaneous regional elections, presidential election and the commemoration of 30 September movement (G30S)," he said after delivering a scientific oration in a graduation ceremony and postgraduate of Muhammadiyah University of Purwokerto (UMP) at the Auditorium Ukhuwah Islamiyah, Banyumas Regency, Central Java, on Saturday (September 23).

Tito said he is aware of growing concern of communism resurection in Indonesia. He explained the ideology of communism has dimmed at global level. 

Even in Russia and China, he said, capitalist system tended to over rule.

"However, in Indonesia, the principle of the Police is to uphold the rule of law," he reiterated.

He explained People Consultative Assembly's decision and the Law No. 27 of 1999 prohibit the spread of ideology including marxism, leninism, communism. "Therefore, if there is an effort to spread the ideology, the police will clearly enforce the law," he said.

Tito said, restraining to raise sensitive issues is not the same to forgetting the history. He claimed nowadays is not a good moment to discuss it. 

He asked the people to be thoughtful in discussing sensitive issues as it could be contraproductive to the nation.

"Let's return it to the law enforcement," he said.
